Atlanta Public Schools, 1957-1961

This is the largest series within the collection consisting of the many Organizations that Calhoun was affiliated with. These organizations documents Calhoun's civil rights, political, volunteer and civic activities. Calhoun was either a member of these organizations or held some type of leadership role. Calhoun was co-founder of the Atlanta Negro Voters Leagues and president of the Atlanta Chapter of the NAACP, which was very instrumental in helping Blacks gain their right to vote. He was also an active member in other voter registration projects and organizations – Atlanta Negro Voters League, Atlanta League of Women Voters, Georgia Voters League and The Voter Education Project (VEP). Calhoun also worked greatly with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) through there State-wide Registration program to help set-up voter registration drives to help get Black's registered to vote. The types of items found within these groups materials are minutes, fliers, correspondences, news releases, volunteer registration cards, financial reports, rules and regulations, and field organizer's reports.

This series also contains documents from the Atlanta Charter Commission, Atlanta Inner-City Development Corporation, Atlanta Regional Commission, Economic Opportunity Atlanta (EOA), Grant Park Model Cities Area Council, and Omega Psi Phi. Of note, he was a dedicated member of Big Bethel A.M.E. Church where he served in many capacities. Included in these records are committee reports, programs, minutes, agendas, correspondence, proposals and by-laws.
