The series is comprised of typed and handwritten manuscripts and chapter drafts, graphs, charts and correspondence.

Of sigificance in this series is a book project that Henderson undertook to address several concers, namely, the rate of economic development in the South and its people, institutions and the rate of economic development in this historic region. Data relative to the writing of the book,The Advancing South: Manpower Prospects and Problems, includes reports and studies of the thirteen states making up "the South," various reference material and correspondence from the other three co-Authors (J. Maddox, E. Liebhafsky and H. Hamlin). The first few chapters of the book focus on the South of the past and the ways in which the distant and recent history of the region to its present level of development, and which set it off from the rest of the nation as a "distinctive" region.
