The series includes correspondence, minutes, manuscripts, printed materials and reports representing twenty years of public and private research service rendered through international and national, regional and state, local and special appointments.

The documents depict Henderson's appointments to five White House Conferences during the administrations of Kennedy, Johnson and Ford. These conference included the Conference on Full Employment on Economic Growth (1961); Equal Employment Opportunity (1962); "To Fulfill These Rights" (1965-1966), of which Henderson served as Director; Special Task Force on Economic Security and Welfare (1963-1966); and the Conference on Inflation (1974). Materials also depict henderson's ten years of service to various departments of the United States government, including the Department of Commerce and the Department of Labor. Noteworthy among Henderson's regional and local appointments are the Commission on the Future of the South (1974) and the Metropolitan Applied Research Cetner, Inc. (1969), where he worked on the "Two Cities Project."
