Scope and content note

This series contains biographical information about John H. Wheeler and the Wheeler family, along with personal correspondence, financial records, memorabilia, newspaper clippings featuring Wheeler, and subject files. The Correspondence sub-series contains personal and professional letters and telegrams, including correspondence from John F. Kennedy (1966). The Memorabilia sub-series includes personal programs, plaques, awards, certificates, and other personal items related to Wheeler's education and career. The subject files include materials related to famous individuals and hobbies Wheeler enjoyed including music, sports, and the theater. He followed the careers of Black athletes, artists, and musicians and collected newspaper clippings and articles related to notable figures such as Mattiwilda Dobbs, Benjamin Mays, Arthur Ashe and others. Wheeler also collected materials related to school desegregation, banking, and Black achievements.
