The US-South Africa Leadership Exchange Program was a private non-profit organization established in 1958 and sponsored by the African-American Institute with funding provided by individual and corporate donors from the U.S. and South Africa. The organization’s purpose was to help in “understanding between South Africa and American professional, business and civic leaders.”

John H. Wheeler became a member of US-SALEP in 1959, and as a fellow, he traveled to apartheid South Africa for one month. He later traveled to the International Trade Fair in Tripoli in 1963 as the representative of former North Carolina governor,Luther Hodges.
