Harold Jackman knew a great number of people associated with the Harlem Renaissance. He corresponded with these friends and collected their works when published and also collected manuscripts or unpublished writings. Harold Jackman also collected articles and book reviews about African American authors. Many of the items collected were from famous people such as: W.E.B. DuBois, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Paul and Eslanda Robeson, Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, Owen Dodson, Carl Van Vechten, Leigh Whipper, James Weldon Johnson, Gwendolyn Brooks, Christopher Handy, Stella Brewer Brookes, Marcus Garvey, Horace Mann Bond, James Baldwin, Georgia Douglas Johnson and Arna Bontemps. Jackman also compiled biographical information about African Americans important during his lifetime. After his death, his sister, Ivie Jackman continued his work by creating the Harold Jackman Memorial Committee. This organization continued to send information about people and events important in African American Arts and Culture until the late 1980s.
