Scope and contents

Henry P. Slaughter was an avid collector of many things; books, pamhplets, photographs, and documnets. In this series are the words and autographs of many famous men and women. Some of these people were fervent abolitionists, some former slaves, some political leaders-including presidents, and some were just average epeople trying to better the world they lived in. This series also contains a subseries of legal documnets. Most of these documents dela with various aspects of slave holding; sale of slaves, hiring out of laves, disputes over the ownership of slaves, and the manumission or emancipation of slaves. There are also documents dealing with identuring (of self and children); wills; and an oath of allegiance to the United States by a southerner during Reconstruction.

This series is arranged into eight subseries: 1. People, arranged alphabetically by the authors last name. 2. Legal documents, arranged chronologically. 3. Broadsides, arranged chronologically. 4. Masonic organizations, divided into two groups, Publications and Branch membership applications. 5. Music, arranged by composer. 6. Photographs and Political cartoons, alphabetically by subject. 7. Unemployed citizens' organizations, arranged alphabetically by organization name. 8. Henry P. Slaughter, divided into Catalogs, Correspondence, and Personal Items.
