[Race and religion], undated
Scope note
This series makes up the largest portion of the collection. The writings are dated
from the 1933 until his death in 1977 and includes sermons, convocations, prayers, communion meditations, and services for funerals, installations, and ordinations. Fragile items have been photocopied for research use. As a preservation measure the original fragile items are restricted and stored separately in Box 24 at the end of the collection.
Sermons and lectures comprise the majority of this series. They are organized by date or alphabetically by title. Sermons or lectures were titled either by Rev. Hawkins or the person who initially sorted the papers. Titles supplied by the archivist (Alexandra Bernet) are placed in brackets. There are a number of incomplete sermons located at the end of this series.
Other writings by Rev. Hawkins are categorized by subject, due to their singular focus. Communion meditations are organized alphabetically by their first line. Funeral services are organized alphabetically by the person for whom the service was being held. Installation and ordination services are organized alphabetically by the name of the person installed or ordained. There are also a number of prayers, usually only one or two pages in length. They are organized in alphabetical order by the first line of the prayer.
