Scope note

From the Series:

The bulk of the series contains materials related to the various commissions and committees Rev. Hawkins served on in the United Presbyterian Church (UPC). Rev. Hawkins became the Moderator of the General Assembly of the UPC in 1964, the first African American elected to this position. Service programs from the General Assembly, endorsements for his bid to become Moderator, items about the charges of communism leveled against him, congratulatory letters, and correspondence are all included in this series. Congratulatory letters are arranged alphabetically by sender, other materials by date. The Council on Church and Race, which Rev. Hawkins was very active in, is indicative of the type of change he helped to effect in the UPC and society as a whole.

The series also includes a few folders of information about St. Augustine Presbyterian Church. Of interest are the interracial youth camps sponsored by the Church in the 1950s. There are a few items of other organizations and committees Rev. Hawkins was affiliated with that help document his community work, and interest in international affairs including protesting the Vietnam War and support for international relief agencies.
