Biographical Note

Henry Jordan Clay Caldwell Chambers (1813-1892) was born in North Carolina. Chambers contended that he was born of white parents and lived as a free white person until the age of 11, when he was kidnapped and enslaved. During Chambers' years of enslavement, he sought literacy, practiced medicine, became a father of fifteen, and married twice. Following emancipation, Chambers reportedly entered local politics and community engagement. He founded schools in Iredell and Rowan counties (North Carolina).
