Biographical / Historical
C. Rose Smith (b. 1995, Memphis, TN) is an American visual artist whose work explores identity, race, and power through photography and time-based media. Her practice often blends fashion, studio portraiture, and site-specific settings to challenge societal norms and reimagine personal and collective histories. Smith holds a BFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design and an MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Influenced by the traditions of African American photographers and 19th-century portraiture, her work collapses past and present to create a visual dialogue on memory and representation. Her art has been exhibited internationally, including at Autograph in London, FotoFest Biennial in Houston, and Hangar in Brussels, and she has received honors such as the Prix Picto de la Mode and the Leica Coup de Coeur Award.
