Biographical / Historical
The Mother’s Social Literary Circle, better known as MO-SO-LIT, was founded in October of 1922 by “twelve progressive Atlanta women.” The first meeting was held in the home of Nellie Mitchell Thomas, a Tuskegee graduate and wife of Jesse O. Thomas. The group sought to both promote positive development of their children, their communities, and themselves through social, political, and literary engagement. They shared a commitment to “being homemakers, community workers, and church leaders.” Some also distinguished themselves as educators, academics, social workers, and supporters of the arts. Prominent members over the years have included Dr. Patricia Bond Hutto, Jewel Woodward Smith, Fredericka Flack Hurley, and Dr. Grace Burley Boggs Smith.
