Athenaeum, Vol. 19, No. 7, May 1917
Scope and Contents
The Athenaeum was a student-led publication organized in 1898 by Timothy Williams, a graduate of Atlanta Baptist College (now Morehouse College), and students from Atlanta Baptist College and Spelman Seminary. The first editor was John A. Mason, a 1901 graduate. The journal featured editorials, campus news, club updates, alumni notes, athletics coverage, humor, and advertisements. It was a completely student-operated publication, with the editor, business manager, and printing office manager all being students. The Athenaeum was considered an outlet for student opinion and a vehicle to showcase literary talent. It was published until 1925, when it was discontinued. The Maroon Tiger publication is considered the successor to the Athenaeum.
