Morehouse College, 1944-1962

The subseries consists of materials from courses Martin Luther King, Jr. took at Morehouse College, administrative documents, and papers related to his teaching a seminar in Social Philosophy. Included are annotated blue book exams, class notes, lists of exam questions, and a short essay about history. There are also typed notes about philosophy from the summer of 1946 that appear to have been taken by someone else since King did not take a philosophy class until 1947-1948. A brochure with 55 Facts about Morehouse and form letter from the Department of Dormitory Life about finding employment provide information about the college and its activities. King’s official transcript, reproduced in 1950, indicates his early struggles with academic work. The subseries also contains outlines, notes, a class role, and two sets of exam questions from the Seminar in Social Philosophy King taught during the 1961-1962 school year, focusing on several prominent philosophers and their theories. Also included are bibliographies and reading lists prepared by Kenneth Underwood that may have been used in preparation for the course.
