Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The Evelyn G. Lowery papers series consists of correspondence and personal papers of Evelyn G. Lowery that documents her life as a civil rights activist and her contributions to her various communities. Lowery worked as president of SCLC/W.O.M.E.N., as well as helped organize women’s church groups such as the Church Women United and her home churches of Central United Methodist and Cascade United Methodist. She was also an active participant in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and retained many of her programs and pamphlets from her time there.

The personal papers document biographical material covering Evelyn G. Lowery and her experience marching in the civil rights movement, including a detailed account of being targeted by the Ku-Klux Klan in Decatur, Alabama in 1979. Biographical sketches written by various family members and friends also depict the many awards and marches that she helped lead.
