This series includes well over a thousand letters addressed to, or written by, Dr. Bacote. Included are letters to family, friends, students and former students, colleagues and co-workers, community activists, publishers, and many letters from very prominent individuals. Most of the correspondence reflects his work and participation with the many scholarly, political, and civic organizations including the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, The Journal of Negro History, The National Democratic Party and the Georgia Records Advisory Board. The file also includes a great deal of correspondence with colleagues at Atlanta University. Much of teh content deals with day-to-day activities and official correspondence from organizations. Highlighting this series are letters from W.E. B. Dubois, Roy Wilkins, Ivan Allen, Horace Mann Bond, Rufus Clement, C. Vann Woodward, E. Franklin Frazier, Vincent Harding, John Hope, Rayford Logan, and Albert Manley. Another rare item is a letter addressed to Dr. Bacote's father, the Reverend Samuel William Bacote from BOoker T. Washington regarding the dishonorable discharge of an African American army unit by President Theodore Roosevelt.
