Scope and contents
The Personal Papers series contains materials about and collected by Aku Kadogo, primarily comprising of memorabilia with limited biographical information about Aku. This collection includes articles authored by Aku and articles written about her. In 2002, The Monitor featured an article about Aku, in her capacity as the director of Wayne State University's Bonstelle Company, for their production of Ntozake Shange's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf. Aku also authored two articles published in Vogue and Black Masks.
The Memorabilia sub-series encompasses correspondence, posters, and autographed and inscribed books. Notably, the collection includes Ntozake Shange's funeral program and the program for Bal Negre by Katherine Dunham, who had a profound influence on Aku. Additionally, the collection features a certificate and news article documenting Aku's participation in the 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games.
