Spaulding, C.C., President, North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, 1931
Scope and contents
The records of James Hardy Dillard, President of the Anna T. Jeanes Foundation (1908-1931) and director of the John F. Slater Fund (1910-1930), consist mainly of correspondence generated as a result of his work in both organizations, although records relating to the Jeanes Fund far outweigh those of the Slater Fund. Also included in this series are a variety of other types of records amassed due to his service in these organizations and from outside activities. Most of the correspondence consists of incoming letters from Board of Trustees members of the Anna T. Jeanes Foundation and John F. Slater Fund, education officials and specialists from Southern states, teachers, executives, and clergy. Among the noteable correspondents are Will Alexander, Trevor Arnett, Benjamin Brawley, Virginia Randolph, William A. Slater, and Booker T. Washington. The correspondence and administrative records concern financial matters of both funds and educational issues such as industrial education for African Americans.
