These materials about Hale Woodruff were accumulated by Winifred Stoelting (now Dr. Winifred Hollingsworth) in research for her dissertation, Hale Woodruff, Artist and Teacher: Through the Atlanta Years (Emory University, 1978). There are 42 folders comprised primarily of letters written by Hale Woodruff to Stoelting answering questions to assist in her research. Sometimes the folders include Woodruff’s handwritten answers to a typed questionnaire and narrative notes Woodruff wrote discussing his remembrances of his life while in Indianapolis, Europe, and Atlanta or his thoughts on issues such as the use of the term “primitive” when referencing African art. Written in 1977 and 1978, the letters sometimes convey current activities such as notable visitors and recent accolades and awards, updates on art Woodruff was working on and articles he was writing, as well as personal concerns related to his health. Of note is one folder with a questionnaire answered by Woodruff’s wife, Theresa, discussing her career and life. There are 38 slides of Hale Woodruff’s art. Many of these slides are of images included in Stoelting’s dissertation. The slides are for research and study, no duplication is permitted. Accompanying these materials are twenty audio cassette tapes, primarily interviews Stoelting conducted with Hale Woodruff’s colleagues and students. (See Series C.)
