Biographical / Historical

The National Association of Guardsmen was formed in Brooklyn, New York in 1933 by 13 young African American men, most of whom were alumni of Morgan State College, as well as Howard and Lincoln Universities. The group was established in order to foster social interactions and programs for members of the community. The statement of purpose for the organization is to "Provide a regular and periodic social association and foster close relationship and fellowship among its individual members and Chapters." The group expanded quickly developing chapters across the United States, until it capped its membership at 18 chapters. The group is primarily made up of African American men, with a large portion of them gaining 'emeritus' status upon reaching 70 years of age and having had 20 years of membership.
