Historical note

The Gate City Day Nursery Association (GCDNA) is a daycare and childhood education provider based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1905 by Dr. Gertrude Ware of Atlanta University and Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois, and maintained by a primarily female workforce, the GCDNA was established to meet the needs of working mothers who could not afford traditional healthcare. A group of women from Atlanta University, along with Dr. Du Bois and Dr. Ware, worked together to form the "Gate City Free Kindergarten" for African American children in Atlanta. The organization is still active today, with three early learning centers in Atlanta and a mission to provide affordable early learning childhood programs to children from birth through Pre-K.
