Scope and contents

The Frederic V. Brooks papers is a collection comprised of materials related to the personal and professional life of Atlanta businessman, Frederic V. Brooks. Brooks was a life insurance agent for the Atlanta Life Insurance Company and active in the Atlanta community. This collection contains his personal and professional papers including correspondence, Atlanta Urban League items, information on his funeral service, exam and course materials from the American College of Life Underwriters as well as printed and published materials, and some photographs of him.

Biographical note

Frederic "Freddie" Victor Brooks was born in Madison, Georgia in 1911. He was the son of Dr. Robert Horace Brooks and Anita Rochin Brooks. Brooks attended Atlanta University for high school and college. He played baseball while in college and enjoyed sports and bridge. He was a charter memeber of the Atlanta Contract Bridge League and participated in the Atlanta Urban League. Brooks married Hallie Beachem on June 10, 1936. During World War II, he was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia in the administrative company. He died in October 1965.

Brooks's profession was life insurance agent. He worked for the Black owned financial company, Atlanta Life Insurance Company. He attended the American College of Life Underwriters and earned the prestigious Chartered Life Underwriter (C.L.U) title in 1957. Brooks was one of the first African Americans from Atlanta to earn this designation and 14th overall in the United States.
