Scope and Contents of the Series

The series is comprised of manuscripts (circa 1947-1968) for works written by Martin Luther King, Jr., including sermon material from his time as a student at Boston University as well as his employment as minister for Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL, and Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA; speeches written and delivered in his capacity as a leader of the Civil Rights Movement, and president of the Montgomery Improvement Association... and Southern Christian Leadership Conference; articles on religion, race and politics written for various publications; statements to the press on events in the Civil Rights Movement, and reports on racial matters in the United States; notes and fragments of unidentified material. Multiple drafts are frequent. All interviews with Dr. King can be found in the Series 3: Writings by Others, under the name of the interviewer or publication.
