Scope and content note

This series is comprised of portraits of over 800 individuals including presidents, deans, faculty, staff, students, and alumni of Atlanta University and other Atlanta University Center schools. Also included are portraits of politicians, judges, lawyers, college presidents, entertainers, novelists, poets, clergy, and activists. Notables include Marian Anderson, Pearl Baily, Josephine Baker, Mary McLeod Bethune, Arna Bontemps, Benjamin Brawley, Horace Bumstead, Ralph Bunche, George Washington Carver, William Crogman, Fredrick Douglas, James Forman, John Hope Franklin, E. Franklin Frazier, William Hastie, Alonzo Herndon, John Hope, Langston Hughes, Martin Luther King Jr., Lucy Laney, Ralph McGill, A. Phillip Randolph, Eleanor Roosevelt, Lillian Smith, Booker T. Washington, Walter White, and Whitney Young. There are several boxes of portraits that have not been identified.
