Scope and contents

From the Collection:

The Rufus E. Clement Records are the fifth series in the Atlanta University Presidential Records.

Dr. Rufus E. Clement was named sixth President of Atlanta University in 1937. He served in that position until his death in 1967. Most of the material in this series is contained in the Administrative Files. The Administrative Files are comprised of departmental, faculty, and financial records, applications for positions, information on campus events, enrollment statistics, and buildings and grounds. There is a ten year gap in the files from 1957 to 1966. The bulk of the material is concentrated in the years prior to 1957. This series also contains Board of Trustees records and University Faculty Committee Reports, printed and published materials, correspondence and administrative reports from Gammon Theological Seminary, Clark, Morehouse, Morris Brown, and Spellman Colleges. Other material consists of correspondence and reports from organizations such as the United Negro College Fund, National Education Association, Carnegie Research Fund, General Education Board, Harmon Foundation, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Atlanta Urban League, Southern Regional Council, Southern Conference for Human Welfare, Georgia Department of Education, and the United States Veterans Administration. The Atlanta University Center Corporation files contain bulletins, correspondence, and financial records. The Clement Records also provide documentation of Dr. Clement's service on the Atlanta Board of Education. Dr. Clement won election to that body in 1953. Such records include correspondence, minutes of meetings, reports and dockets.
