Scope and contents
The Edward Twichell Ware records are the fifth series of the Atlanta University Presidential Records.
This series includes records generated during the administration of Edward Twichell Ware, third president of Atlanta University. Among the material are handwritten invitations to Ware’s inauguration in 1907, and correspondence with individuals such as Myron Adams, W.E.B. Dubois, John Hope, James Weldon Johnson, Lucy Laney, John Slater, and U.S. President William H. Taft. Also included are War Department Papers, which relate to Atlanta University serving as a post for the U.S. Army during World War I. Institutional files comprise a substantial portion of this series and includes letters and applications for positions at Atlanta University, financial records, correspondence with heads of foundations and colleges, and information on events held at Atlanta University. The largest group of records is a General Name File which is comprised of letters from donors, student organizations, Atlanta University catalog requests, and teachers regarding prospective students.
