Biographical note
Dr. Thomas D. Jarrett was elected Acting President of Atlanta University after the death of Rufus Clement in 1967. He was elected the 7th President of the school a year later, and served in this capacity until 1977. He began his tenure at Atlanta University in 1947 and worked as Professor of English, Chairman of the Department of English, and Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. During the period of his presidency the University greatly expanded its doctoral and master's programs. Doctoral programs in Educational Administration and Supervision, Political Science, and Chemistry were initiated, along with specialist degrees in Education and in Library Service. Jarrett received his undergraduate degree from Knoxville College, and his graduate degrees from Fisk University and the University of Chicago.
