Scope and Contents
The General/Non-Morehouse College files series includes materials related to Mays’ professional activities that are not connected to his role as president of Morehouse College. The General series documents his work as a Baptist minister, civil rights activist, author, leader in the YMCA movement, and advocate for ecumenicism and interfaith dialogue. Notable correspondents include Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy, Langston Hughes, Mary McLeod Bethune, Adlai Stevenson, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Martin Luther King Jr., Roy Wilkins, and Jesse Jackson. Also present is institutional correspondence from organizations such as the National Council of Churches, the National Urban League, the Young Men’s Christian Association, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The files are arranged alphabetically by the name of the correspondent.
