Biographical / Historical
Hugh Morris Gloster was born on May 11, 1911 to parents John and Dora Gloster in Brownsville, TN. He received a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College in 1931, a master’s degree from Atlanta University in 1933, and a PhD from New York University in 1943. In 1937, Gloster helped to co-found the College Language Association, an organization devoted to fostering advanced skills in language and literature at historically Black colleges and universities, serving as the first president of the organization from 1937-1938.
Gloster began his teaching career at LeMayne-Owen College in Memphis, TN, where he was employed from 1933-1941. Afterwards, he taught at the Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) from 1946-1967. During this period, Gloster also participated in a variety of educational initiatives sponsored by the State Department, such as serving as Fulbright Professor of English at Hiroshima University (1953-1955), Visiting Professor of English at the University of Warsaw, and Professor of English in the American Specialist Program.
As president of Morehouse, Gloster oversaw a period of consistent growth in terms of enrollment, financial health, faculty size, and the number of building projects. Some of his accomplishments include: establishing the Morehouse School of Medicine as an independent entity in 1981, instituting dual major engineering programs between Morehouse and the Georgia Institute of Technology and Boston University, doubling the size of the student body and improving student performance through curriculum modernization, overseeing two successful capital campaigns of $20 million each during the 1970s and 1980s, respectively, and acquiring thirty acres of land leading to the construction of twelve buildings.
Gloster died on February 16, 2002. He was survived by his third wife, Yvonne King Gloster, three children, eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and four stepchildren through his previous marriages to Louise Elizabeth Torrence and Beulah Victoria Harold.
